ACTION: Write to your MSPs to protect abortion rights in Scotland

Following the news that the UK government have confirmed that abortion law will be devolved to Scotland, two motions have been lodged at the Scottish Parliament (currently in recess) regarding abortion rights.

One motion is for abortion rights and the other is very much against them. It’s important to ask your MSPs to sign Patrick Harvie MSP’s motion in support of abortion rights.

Pro-choice Motion

This motion was lodged by Patrick Harvie MSP, co-convener of the Scottish Greens, in support of choice:

Motion S4M-14524: Patrick Harvie, Glasgow, Scottish Green Party, Date Lodged: 15/10/2015

Commitment to Women’s Reproductive Rights
That the Parliament notes the stated intention of the Secretary of State for Scotland to amend the Scotland Bill to achieve the devolution of abortion law; recognises the fundamental importance of women’s sexual and reproductive rights, and commits to defend those rights against any attempt to undermine women’s access to safe and legal abortion in Scotland.

Supported by: John Finnie, Malcolm Chisholm, Alison Johnstone, Jean Urquhart, Dennis Robertson, Colin Keir

(Rhoda Grant MSP (Labour) has also just signed this).

Please write to all your MSPs asking them to sign up to Patrick Harvie’s motion as soon as possible.

Remember, in the Scottish Parliament, everyone has eight MSPs representing them, constituency and list. To discover who your MSPs are go to writetothem.com and enter your postcode. This website makes it easy to write to all of your MSPs quickly.

All you need to do is send your MSPs a short note to say you support the motion lodged by Patrick Harvie on the Commitment to Women’s Reproductive Rights and would like to know if they will sign it too.

We’d love to hear what replies you get too – please forward them to arcscotlandonline@gmail.com if you can.

Anti-Choice Motion

John Mason MSP (SNP) lodged the below motion on 19th October against abortion rights. This clearly demonstrates that it will be important throughout the process of devolving abortion law to Scotland to speak up for pro-choice rights. It’s important to ask your MSPs to support Patrick Harvie’s motion.

Motion S4M-14542: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party, Date Lodged: 19/10/2015

Devolution of Abortion Law

That the Parliament notes the stated intention of the Secretary of State for Scotland to amend the Scotland Bill to achieve the devolution of abortion law; recognises what it considers the fundamental rights of babies to be protected both before and after birth as well as the importance of women’s sexual and reproductive rights, and commits to achieving a proper balance between these respective rights.

John Mason confirmed to the press on 19th October that he is keen to see the current UK 24-week limit reduced when law is devolved to Scotland.
