The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill is expected to take less than six months to pass through all its stages in Parliament. Amendments – including on abortion - can be tabled at almost every stage but the timetable of the Bill will only be known stage by stage. This means that there is only a relatively short window of opportunity for the pro-choice movement to get active and to influence parliamentarians.
Abortion Rights may have to call public initiatives at short notice to maximise their impact, so please make sure that you have signed for 'action alerts on the website for announcements of dates and details.
We will be calling a lobby of parliament and rally to coincide with key votes in the House of Commons and other actions, protests and demonstrations as required. We will also produce lobbying postcards, petitions, posters and stickers for you to use once further parliamentary details emerge.
What you can do . . . .
Sign up for regular email briefings updating you on the situation in parliament and next steps in the campaign using the action alert section of the website. Please also forward on the briefings to others who may be interested and encourage them to sign up too.
Write to your MP. Model letters, briefings and details of how you can contact your MP are available to help. Please forward on copies of any responses you receive to help us build a clear picture of parliamentary support.
Pass a resolution in your trade union branch, women’s or student group. This is useful way of engaging others in the issue and building practical support for the campaign. You can download a model resolution here to adapt for your meeting.
Organise a pro-choice meeting, event or publicity action. Abortion Rights can provide speakers or speaker notes, films for screenings and placards for events in student unions, trade union branches and public meetings.
Counter media lies. Press and broadcast coverage of the abortion debate is often dominated by the anti-abortion agenda and myths. Please do email, text, phone or write in to respond to articles, phone ins, news reports etc. It does have an impact on editorial decisions. Visit the media watch section for details.
Join Abortion Rights. We rely on funding from individual members, affiliates and supporters. As the campaign intensifies around the Bill we will need significantly greater resources than before to counter the impact of the well-funded anti-abortion lobby.
Add your pro-choice message to the pro-choice majority' website . The public support collected will be used in future media and campaigning work.
Thank you for your support.
