Control over fertility is crucial for women studying in further or higher education. The introduction of the contraceptive pill and the legalisation of abortion have transformed women’s lives – increasing control over when, and if, to have children and so boosting women’s education and employment prospects, incomes and opportunities.
Women, including graduates, still face a huge gender pay gap and are under-represented in nearly all positions of power in society. An LSE study, in 2005, showed reproductive rights and choices have improved women’s social, economic and political position to a greater degree than equal pay and equal opportunities legislation.
Calling on students to defend the legal time limit on abortion Women's reproductive rights have been hard fought for and are now under attack by an increasingly powerful anti-choice lobby. The student movement has played an important role in defending women’s rights to abortion when they have come under attack in the past. Now the pro-choice movement needs the active support of students again.Abortion Rights, the national pro-choice campaign, is pleased to have the enthusiastic support and affiliation of the National Union of Students Women’s Campaign. Students can make a real difference to defending women’s hard fought for reproductive rights over the coming months by supporting our campaign initiatives to defend the legal time limit on abortion and by joining Abortion Rights as an individual member. Our new student information, membership and affiliation leaflet is available to download here. |
