Conservative Leadership Candidates
We have listened with interest as many of the candidates for the Leader of the Conservative Party, and our next Prime Minister, have expressed their views on abortion.
As you will be aware, most of the candidates running have a poor record on abortion rights, with some supportive of a draconian reduction in women’s rights, such as halving the abortion time limit – from 24 to 12 weeks.
Whether these are personal views or not, is irrelevant. It demonstrates that still, in 2019, candidates to be our next Prime Minister do not accept a woman’s right to make decisions over what happens in her own body. This is deeply problematic and raises significant questions about any alleged commitment to equality and women’s rights.
Abortion is now devolved to the Scottish Parliament, therefore, in light of comments made by your UK counterparts, we would be grateful for confirmation that you – nor the Conservative Group at Holyrood – will support or propose legislation seeking to restrict a woman’s right to choose.
We note that in 2017 you sought and secured guarantees regarding LGBT rights from Theresa May when she was in talks with the Democratic Unionist Party, with regards to the confidence and supply arrangement.
We would grateful if you can confirm that you have sought similar guarantees from your preferred leadership candidate, Sajid Javid MP, in that any Government he leads will not support any legislation to restrict a woman’s right to chose.
The right to choose is a fundamental human right. No woman should be forced to carry a pregnancy to term against her will.
We look forward to hearing from you.
