Who we are

Abortion Rights is the national pro-choice campaign. We are campaigning to defend and extend women’s rights and access to safe, legal abortion. We oppose any attack on the 1967 Abortion Act including any attempt to lower the abortion time limit. It’s almost 50 years after the introduction of safe, legal abortion in Britain women’s rights should be advanced not driven back. A consistent three quarters of people support a woman’s right to choose in Britain. We believe the law should be brought into line with public opinion – so that women can make their own reproductive decisions without the current unfair legal barriers, obstructions and delays.

We aim to:
Oppose any restrictions in women’s current rights and access to abortion.

Improve the current UK abortion law for women, to make abortion available on the request of the woman.

Improve women’s access to, and experience of , abortion – ensure all women in the UK have equal access to safe, legal, and free abortion.

Abortion Rights work closely with the parliamentary All Party Pro-choice and Sexual Health group and the Voice for Choice coalition of sexual health and education organisations.

Abortion Rights was formed in 2003 by the merger of the two long-standing and influential campaigns – the National Abortion Campaign (NAC) and the Abortion Law Reform Association (ALRA).

We seek to build the widest possible support for a woman’s right to choose and encourage individuals and organisations – women’s groups, trade unions, political representatives, academics and students, health care professionals, minority ethnic, lesbian and gay and disabled people’s organisations and all others to get involved.

We are an active membership-based democratic campaigning organisation. In additional to individual members, we are delighted to have the support of NUS and civil society organisations as well as the TUC and national trade unions including AMICUS , ASLEF , CWU , FBU , NAPO ,PCS , RMT , T&G , TSSA , UCU , UNISON , STUC trade union regions, branches, sections and individual trade unionists.

Abortion Rights is an independent campaign without any government or church funding. Money from membership and affiliation fees, grants, donations and our fundraising Pro-choice Lottery scheme is crucial to sustain our important work.

We would like to thank The Andrew Wainwright Reform Trust Ltd for the generous financial support they have made towards our campaigning activities.

We would also like to thank following organisations who have who financial supported Abortion Rights in the past The Feminist Review Trust , UNISON’s General Political Fund, and Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust
